It’s time for a new expansion pack! With the collective experience and with expansions for the Age of Empires II series, Age of Mythology almost feels like the next logical step, although next time we probably shouldn’t wait over a decade before taking on the challenge 😉 But for great games like Age of Mythology, these years are merely a number.

And 12 years since the release of its expansion pack: The Titans. It’s been 13 years since the release of Age of Mythology on PC. Selthor gives Age of Mythology: EX – Tale of the Dragon DLC a Drastik Measure 3 out of 10 (30).13 years. The imbalance added by the Monk, as well as the lackluster campaign leave me wanting. The game is $9.99 on Steam though you can get it bundled with the base version of the game for $34.99 (overall a $5 discount) however I would pass on this game. The types of missions, the way the civilization plays, and just the overall theme of the game do not feel like an Age of Mythology game. I really wanted to enjoy this game, but it just doesn’t feel right. This campaign is fully voiced, however it plays and feels nothing like the rest of the series, which made me sad. The basis of the story is that the revival of the Titans caused enough of a disturbance to break the bond of Yin and Yang, throwing China into turmoil. The campaign for Tale of the Dragon takes place in China, set during the time of The New Atlantis campaign from the Titans Expansion, and is only loosely tied to the rest of the story. This really feels like it creates an imbalance, the Monk worked in Age of Empires because it was something all factions had, giving this hero to only one faction seems overpowered. It functions like the Monk from the Age of Empires series, being able to heal units and convert enemy units (only human military units, though worshiping the deity Shennong allows Monks to convert non-titan myth units as well). The second big change is the Chinese hero unit the Monk. First, they have the garden building, which gives you a trickle of a resource of your choice. So the Chinese faction still follows the same Deity guideline, but has some unique additions to how the game is played.

This review is only of the expansion if you are interested in the base version of the game you can read that here. This expansion adds in a new civilization, the Chinese, and a new Chinese centered campaign. On Jan 28 th 2016 Age of Mythology got its first expansion in nearly 13 years with the release of Age of Mythology EX: Tale of the Dragon.
